Overview

Valencia (Valencian Community) is one of Spain's most rewarding destinations: Sun-drenched Mediterranean birthplace of Paella Valenciana, Santiago Calatrava's futuristic City of Arts & Sciences, the 9-km Turia riverbed park, and historic silk-exchange Gothic halls.

Getting here and moving around is straightforward: High-speed Renfe AVE, Avlo, Iryo, and Ouigo trains connect Madrid Chamartín to Valencia Joaquín Sorolla in 1h 50m (from €9–€29), while Euromed connects Barcelona-Sants in 2h 45m. Best time to visit

The most pleasant months to visit Valencia are March–June & September–November, when plaza terraces (terrazas) are lively and daytime temperatures are ideal for walking. Book Renfe AVE / Iryo / Ouigo trains and timed monument entries 2–6 weeks ahead.

Local tips

  • Attempting to order authentic Paella Valenciana for dinner—Valencians eat rice exclusively at lunch (1:30–3:30 PM), and genuine paellas require 45 minutes cooked to order for a minimum of 2 people.
  • Mixing up Valencia's two central train stations: long-distance high-speed AVE/Iryo/Ouigo trains use Valencia Joaquín Sorolla, while regional trains and Euromed often use the Modernista Estació del Nord (connected by a 10-minute walk).
  • Visiting during Las Fallas (March 15–19) without booking hotels 6–9 months in advance.
